DiN / Ian Boddy Newsletter April 2013

DiNDDL15 | Ian Boddy - Sid Smith - Jane Molloy | Other Rooms

Other Rooms consists of four long ambient tracks which were all recorded at Spectro Arts Workshop, Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the early 1980's. This was the studio where Boddy spent his formative years in electronic music. These tracks were unearthed whilst Boddy was looking for bonus material for the vinyl box set "Spectroscopic" released by Vinyl on Demand which features Boddy's 3 early cassette albums. Two of the pieces (The Basement & Spirits Rising) are composed by Boddy whilst the other two (Two Postcards & From Where I Sit) are by Sid Smith, whom Boddy collaborated with on several projects during his time at Spectro. The track From Where I Sit features the voice of Jane Molloy. All these pieces have in common the technique of tape delay systems. This is where tape is taken from the recording reel to reel across to a second machine which then plays this back. Depending on the distance between the two recorders a time delay results and the sound can be recirculated round and round to create feedback loops. This technique is virtually impossible to mimic accurately with modern day technology and so for me it was wonderful to hear some of these early experiments.

Theses tracks were all too long to fit on the vinyl records and so I decided to release them as a download album to accompany the release of "Spectroscopic" (VOD110). The major hurdle to overcome though was their sound quality as they had been lurking on cassette in a box for over 30 years. However modern day noise reduction, EQ & compression plug-ins can overcome many such difficulties and I was able to clean up much of the tape hiss. This process is always a balancing act though and I’d certainly not claim these pieces are as pristine as a modern day production is capable of. Nevertheless, they are a unique insight into my formative years and provide a window on some wonderful early sonic explorations.

DiN42 | Ian Boddy | Liverdelphia

Release date 21st May 2013 | Limited to 555 copies

In the autumn of 2012, Ian Boddy played two concerts on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean. The first was his fourth solo appearance at the Gatherings, hosted by Chuck van Zyl, in Philadelphia, USA. Four weeks later he then played at the Capstone Theatre in Liverpool, UK. There might have been over 5,000 kilometres separating the two gigs but Boddy played the same set at each and both his performances were multi-track recorded.

Back in his studio Boddy then proceeded to edit the audio down to a single CD length and to merge the two shows to create a composite concert. Nothing additional was added, but rather, a careful mix was made of the best sections from each performance to create a unique album that was true to the spirit of the original concerts.

In the field of electronic music, Boddy has played live more times than most. He is currently clocking in at around 150+ concerts and the effortless way he manipulates his music in a live setting is a testament to this experience. The music rises and falls in a series of organic, analogue soundscapes. Beautiful moments of musical tenderness are contrasted with large, grandiose orchestrations. The sequencer sections crackle and sparkle with pent up analogue power, with Boddy weaving a web of intricate Moog solo lines and mellotron chords.

The album is released in a strictly limited edition run of 555 copies, in a beautifully designed digipak, featuring the "pumpkin synth" design by Chuck van Zyl for the posters of the Philadelphia show. Thus "Liverdelphia" is a perfect showcase for the unique style of live electronic music created by this well respected UK musician.

 New DiN Web Store

For the past several years DiN has used the USA based company CCNow to do all of it's credit card clearance for purchases of physical CDs from the DiN web store. Unfortunatley this company is now ceasing these operations so we have had to look for an alternative. As DiN has been using the Bandcamp store for all of it's digital albums it made sense to coalesce both of these formats to the same place. So from now on both DiN physical CDs and digital downloads are available from the DiN Bandcamp store:

DiN label for both CD & download @ http://dinrecords.bandcamp.com/
DiNDDL label for digital albums download @ http://dinddl.bandcamp.com/

Most regular CD albums are now priced at £10 + postage + VAT (where applicable) and these come automatically with a free download version in the format of your choice if you would like immediate access to the music whilst you wait for the CD to arrive in the post.
Most regular download versions of albums are now priced @ £7 and again you can choose from several different formats. All include full resolution artwork and some contain bonus material.

Please note that it is not possible to place the DeWolfe library albums onto the Bandcamp store so these are purchased via Paypal. It is no longer possible to buy third party CDs from the DiN store and the DiN t-shirts have now sold out.

Hopefully this will prove to be a reliable and easy system to use but if you encounter any problems or have any feedback then please Email these to ian@ianboddy.com
